La Roca’s Big Debut

It’s been one busy weekend!  This morning I witnessed the debut performance (at least outside of their church) of the hispanic worship band I’ve been teaching, La Roca Band!  A few months ago I was approached by Edher Jimenez, the youth pastor of the church La Roca De Salvacion.  The members of their worship band would be heading back home to Mexico once the harvesting season was over and they wanted to train up a team of young musicians who lived in Moultrie and would be able to serve their church indefinitely.  Brandon (piano instructor), Andre (then drum instructor) and I chose to tackle the challenges inherent to cross-cultural teaching and agreed to work with them.  They started with four students – Wilman (piano), Domingo (guitar), Tony (drums) and Bryan (piano).  The guys enjoyed their lessons so much that they quickly added five more students to their growing band – Luis (guitar), Reyes (bass), Junior (drums), Fredrico (guitar) and Rodrigo (piano).  We have thoroughly enjoyed helping these guys build a cohesive unit and work up a rockin’ set list of praise and worship songs.

Today La Roca Band played for their regional conference of churches.  Despite technical difficulties with the PA system, the guys did a great job and put another notch in their musician’s belt.
